Hi, I am Karlie! Featured in Modern Luxury and Chicago Style Weddings, I photograph weddings across the globe: from Chicago to European villas — for couples who want something truly extraordinary. Every single wedding still feels like the greatest privilege of my life, and if you want a photographer who will treat your day with that level of care and artistry, I would love to connect. 🤍
Armour House at Lake Forest — A Chicago North Shore Wedding Venue Like No Other
There are venues that look beautiful in photos. And then there are venues that stop you completely the moment you walk through the door. Armour House at Lake Forest is the second kind — and this midsummer wedding reminded me exactly why.
If you are a Chicago North Shore bride in the middle of your venue search, let me just say this: go see Armour House in person. Photos do not do it justice.
Every single time I walk into this place I get the same feeling — Italian villa, old world charm, historic and romantic in the best possible way. And then you remember — surprise, you are actually in Illinois! 🥰 Lake Forest Academy on the Chicago North Shore is hiding one of the most stunning historic wedding venues in the entire Midwest and honestly not enough people know about it.
Tall windows flooding every room with the most gorgeous natural light. Calacatta marble details around every corner — including a fireplace that genuinely made me stop mid-shot. The grand staircase alone is worth booking this place. It was made to be photographed and this wedding proved it.
The grounds stretch out beautifully around you and in the middle of summer, they are completely alive. Lush, green, golden hour magic waiting to happen.
Armour House sits right on the Chicago North Shore in Lake Forest, Illinois — one of the most beautiful and underrated wedding destinations in the greater Chicago area. It has that rare combination of historic character and warmth that makes every single image feel timeless.
The Wedding Day — Midsummer, Sunset, North Shore Magic
This wedding happened on one of those perfect summer days that Chicago occasionally blesses us with. The kind where the light gets soft and golden right at ceremony time and everything just falls into place.
The ceremony took place at sunset — with a live band playing as the couple exchanged their vows. I have shot a lot of weddings and live music during a ceremony does something to the energy in the room that nothing else can replicate. Everyone was still. Everyone was present. It was one of those moments I was trying to document and honestly just kept stopping to take it all in 🥰
The Details — Because the Details Said Everything
This couple understood that a wedding is a collection of details that together tell your whole story. And theirs? NEXT LEVEL.
The florals were lush blue and white arrangements filling every single space — tables, corners, windowsills. A full cascading floral arrangement flowed all the way down the grand staircase and I genuinely could not stop photographing it. Against the Calacatta marble and warm candlelight it was something out of a dream.
Speaking of candlelight — the reception dinner was entirely candlelit. Intimate, warm, glowing. This was a small, close circle of their most important people and the atmosphere reflected exactly that. Just pure elegance and love in a room that was built for it.
Why Armour House Works So Well for Wedding Photos
As a Chicago wedding photographer who has shot at venues all across the city and North Shore, I can tell you — Armour House is genuinely special to work in.
The natural light is exceptional. The architectural details give you so many options — the staircase, the marble fireplace, the tall windows, the grounds outside. Whether you are going for editorial and modern or warm and romantic, this venue delivers both without even trying.
And at golden hour in the middle of summer? The whole place glows.

Armour House at Lake Forest Academy is one of the most stunning historic wedding venues in the Midwest and genuinely one of the best kept secrets on the Chicago North Shore. It feels like an Italian villa with Calacatta marble details, a grand staircase, tall windows flooding every room with natural light and lush grounds that glow at golden hour in summer. It is intimate, timeless and completely unlike any downtown Chicago venue. If you are a North Shore bride go see it in person because photos do not do it justice.

Armour House at Lake Forest Academy is a private venue operated through Lake Forest Academy and pricing varies depending on guest count, season and the specific spaces used. Based on what couples report the investment for venue and catering typically starts around $40,000 for a full wedding celebration. Summer and fall weekends book up quickly so reaching out early is essential. For the most accurate and current pricing I always recommend contacting Armour House directly through their website.

The North Shore has its own distinct light, architecture and energy that requires a very different eye than downtown Chicago. The best North Shore wedding photographers know how to work with tall historic windows, candlelit interiors, outdoor grounds at golden hour and the intimate atmosphere that defines venues like Armour House. Look for someone who has actually shot on the North Shore before and always ask to see a full wedding gallery not just highlight images.

Start with the venue. Intimate timeless weddings in Chicago are defined by spaces with real character, historic architecture, natural light, warmth and detail. Venues like Armour House at Lake Forest, the University Club of Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center all give you that feeling immediately. From there build a vendor team you trust completely and let the day breathe. The most timeless weddings are the ones where nothing feels rushed and every detail feels intentional.

A downtown Chicago wedding is urban, architectural and skyline driven. A North Shore wedding is intimate, nature infused and historic. Venues like Armour House at Lake Forest give you old world European charm, lush grounds and extraordinary natural light. If you are drawn to something romantic, timeless and personal rather than modern city energy the North Shore is your answer. Both photograph beautifully but in completely different ways.

Look for a photographer whose portfolio consistently shows small intimate gatherings rather than just large ballroom receptions. You want someone who notices the quiet in between moments. A grandmother watching from across the room. A hand squeeze before the ceremony. Candlelight catching the details on the table. Karlie Dru Photography specializes in exactly this approach, editorial candid photography that captures the full emotional story of an intimate elegant wedding from beginning to end.
